For Sustainability, the most important facet of a mode of transport is how much energy is spent in moving a person (or a ton) one mile. Here we compare important modes in the developed world, stressing energy use (we will sooner or later distinguish personal from freight modes):

Lots of good information, and very likely correct in many of his conclusions.
